Following a very successful three-season term as Paavo Järvi’s assistant at the Orchestre de Paris, Julien Masmondet guest conducts several major orchestras such as the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Orchestre National de Lille, the Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, the Latvian Symphony Orchestra, Yuri Bashmet’s Novaya Russiya in Moscow, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. In the soring 2015 he was also acclaimed for his debuts with the Montpellier opera in a production of La Clemenza di Tito.
At the Orchestre de Paris, Julien Masmondet has worked closely with several highly renowned conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Louis Langrée, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Yutaka Sado, David Zinman, Bertrand de Billy, and accompanied soloists like Emmanuel Ax, Nikolai Znajder, Tabea Zimmermann, Piotr Anderscewski, Jorge Luis Prats. The orchestra also chose him to conduct the very widely publicized Radio Classique festival at Paris’ famous Olympia Hall in 2012.
Julien has been artistic director since 2005 of the Musiques au Pays de Pierre Loti festival in the La Rochelle area in France. His programming is based on the association of music and literature and encounters between musicians and actors, with a special attention to rarely performed French symphonic works by composers like Ropartz, Koechlin, Caplet, Pierné, Hahn or Messager. The festival recently got an official award by the regional government as one of the country’s most original and interesting event. Several renowned French actors have come to the festival along with major musicians. And in 2015, a new branch of the festival will be created in Istanbul.
Sharing and teaching is a very important part of Julien’s approach to his job as a musician. He has been teaching at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris- Alfred Cortot since 2009 and also took part in several outreach projects for young people or through concerts in unprivileged neighborhoods or in prisons.
Born in 1977, Julien Masmondet studied music writing and conducting at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred Cortot where he graduated in 2002. He then worked with Yoel Levi at the London Royal Academy of Music and in Israel, and with Benjamin Zander at the London Master Classes.
